Celebrating 10 Years of the AMC Institute Canadian Chapter

A Decade of Collaboration, Leadership, and Growth

In 2026, the AMC Institute Canadian Chapter (AMCI Canada) proudly marks its 10th anniversary—a milestone that represents far more than the passage of time. It celebrates a decade of leadership, innovation, professional development, and collaboration among Canada's Association Management Companies (AMCs). It is also an opportunity to reflect on a journey that began with a simple idea: that Canadian AMCs would be stronger together than apart.

Today, AMCI Canada stands as the recognized national community for AMC professionals in Canada and the first international chapter of the AMC Institute. Its success is a testament to the vision, dedication, and volunteer leadership of the individuals who believed in the value of creating a forum where Canadian AMCs could connect, learn from one another, and collectively advance the profession.

The Beginning: Identifying a Need

The origins of the AMC Institute Canadian Chapter can be traced back to the summer of 2013. At the time, Canada's AMC sector was growing, but there was no formal mechanism for AMC leaders to connect with one another on a regular basis.

While many Canadian firms were aware of the U.S.-based AMC Institute and respected the work it was doing to advance the profession, Canadian AMCs often operated independently. Opportunities for interaction were largely limited to chance encounters at conferences, industry events, or during client transitions. There was little opportunity to discuss common challenges, share best practices, or collectively address issues unique to the Canadian marketplace.

Recognizing this gap, Serge Micheli of Association & Events Management International and Constance Wrigley-Thomas of Essentient Association Management embarked on a mission to bring together Canada's AMC leaders and create a forum dedicated to collaboration and professional growth. They immediately embraced the idea, and together they began organizing what would become the first gathering of Canadian AMCs.

The concept was straightforward but ambitious. It sought to create a community where competitors could become colleagues, where experiences could be shared openly, and where the collective knowledge of the AMC profession could be leveraged to strengthen all participants.

The Formation of the AMC Forum

On March 27, 2014, the inaugural AMC Forum was held in Toronto. Eighteen participants representing thirteen AMC organizations attended.

The discussions that day quickly confirmed that the need was real. Participants shared many of the same operational challenges, staffing concerns, client management issues, and business development questions. More importantly, they discovered a common desire to learn from one another and to elevate the profession collectively.

One of the earliest conversations focused on defining what an AMC looked like in Canada. While the AMC Institute's definition was well established in the United States, the Canadian landscape differed significantly. Many Canadian firms were smaller and more specialized than their American counterparts.

Rather than viewing this as a limitation, participants recognized it as an opportunity to create a Canadian perspective on association management. The discussion helped establish an inclusive understanding of the Canadian AMC model and set the tone for future collaboration.

The momentum generated by that first meeting was remarkable. Three additional AMC Forum meetings were held throughout 2014, each attracting new participants and reinforcing the value of a dedicated Canadian network.

The Forum also began establishing a presence within the broader association sector, organizing gatherings alongside major industry events, including the CSAE Trillium Chapter Summer Summit and the CSAE National Conference.

What had begun as a single meeting was quickly becoming a movement.

Building a National Community

By 2015, participation in the AMC Forum had expanded significantly. AMC leaders from across the country were becoming involved, and relationships were developing that transcended geography and competition.

The Forum met four times during the year and broadened its focus beyond networking to include education and professional development. In partnership with CSAE, the Forum delivered its first educational program featuring guest speakers at the Summit, demonstrating that it could serve not only as a networking platform but also as a source of industry leadership and knowledge sharing.

As the organization matured, members began considering how to create a sustainable structure that would support long-term growth.

In April 2015, a Chapter Development Task Force was established to explore governance models, standards, and future opportunities. This work represented a significant turning point. Members recognized that the Forum had evolved beyond an informal gathering and had the potential to become a formal organization with a meaningful role within Canada's association management profession.

A strategic planning session held in June 2015 provided further clarity. Participants agreed that the next logical step was to pursue formal affiliation with the AMC Institute and establish a Canadian chapter.

This decision reflected both confidence in the future and a commitment to creating a lasting legacy for the profession.

From Vision to Reality

Throughout late 2015, substantial work was undertaken to transform the vision into reality.

A Memorandum of Understanding was negotiated with the AMC Institute, creating a framework for formal affiliation while recognizing the unique needs of the Canadian market.

At the same time, leaders of the AMC Forum continued discussions with the Canadian Society of Association Executives (CSAE), exploring opportunities to strengthen the visibility and recognition of AMCs within the broader association community. These discussions included initiatives such as an AMC RFP portal, dedicated membership categories, and contributions to sector publications.

The efforts of numerous volunteers culminated in February 2016 when draft bylaws for the proposed AMC Institute Canadian Chapter were completed and approved by the AMC Institute Board of Directors.

On April 11, 2016, the Vision Became Reality

The AMC Institute Canadian Chapter officially received its Certificate of Incorporation and was formally established as the first international chapter of the AMC Institute.

For those who had been part of the journey from the beginning, it was a proud and historic moment. It represented years of planning, collaboration, and commitment from individuals who believed that the Canadian AMC profession deserved its own voice and community.

The Founding Board

The inaugural Board of Directors met for the first time on June 9, 2016.

The founding Board brought together respected leaders from across the association management sector:

  • Serge Micheli, CAE, CEM – Chair
  • Jonathan Strauss – Vice-Chair
  • Constance Wrigley-Thomas, CAE – Secretary/Treasurer
  • Ruth Abrahamson – Director
  • Jenny Faucher – Director
  • Seamus Gearin, CAE – Director
  • Anthony Laycock – Director

These volunteer leaders assumed responsibility for establishing governance structures, developing strategic priorities, building membership, and creating programs that would deliver value to Canadian AMCs.

Their efforts laid the foundation upon which the organization continues to build today.

A Decade of Volunteer Leadership

The success of the AMC Institute Canadian Chapter has been driven by dedicated volunteer leaders who have generously contributed their time, expertise, and vision.

Since incorporation, four Chairs have guided the organization through different stages of growth and development:

Serge Micheli (2016–2018) led the organization through its formative years, helping establish governance systems, operational foundations, and membership engagement.

Constance Wrigley-Thomas (2018–2021) oversaw continued growth and strengthened relationships with industry partners while championing the value of collaboration among Canadian AMCs.

Ruth Abrahamson (2021–2023) guided the Chapter through a period of significant change within the association sector, helping members navigate evolving client expectations and new operational realities.

Peter Waite (2023–Present) has continued to build on the Chapter's strong foundation while positioning the organization for future growth and relevance within an increasingly complex association environment.

Each Chair has also represented the Canadian Chapter on the AMC Institute Board of Directors, ensuring that Canadian perspectives contribute to the advancement of the global AMC profession.

The Impact of the Canadian Chapter

Over the past decade, the AMC Institute Canadian Chapter has delivered value in numerous ways:

  • It has created a trusted network where AMC leaders can discuss challenges, exchange ideas, and learn from one another.
  • It has provided professional development opportunities that strengthen the skills and expertise of AMC professionals.
  • It has promoted higher standards of professionalism and service delivery within the association management industry.
  • It has increased awareness of the AMC business model among associations, not-for-profit organizations, and industry stakeholders.
  • Perhaps most importantly, it has fostered a spirit of collaboration that has strengthened the profession as a whole.

The Chapter's success demonstrates that competitors can work together for the betterment of an industry and that shared learning benefits everyone—including the clients and communities that AMCs serve.

Looking Ahead

As the AMC Institute Canadian Chapter celebrates its first ten years, it also looks toward the future.

The association sector continues to evolve. Organizations face increasing complexity, changing member expectations, rapid technological advancement, and growing demands for strategic leadership. These changes create both challenges and opportunities for AMCs.

The Chapter is well positioned to help its members navigate this evolving landscape by continuing to foster collaboration, promote excellence, support professional development, and advocate for the value of the AMC model.

The next decade will undoubtedly bring new opportunities to innovate, grow, and strengthen the profession.

A Celebration of Community

Anniversaries provide an opportunity to celebrate achievements, but they also provide an opportunity to recognize the people who made those achievements possible.

The AMC Institute Canadian Chapter exists today because of the vision of its founders, the dedication of its volunteer leaders, the commitment of its members, and the support of industry partners who believed in the importance of building a stronger AMC community in Canada.

What began as a conversation between two colleagues in 2013 has evolved into a thriving national organization that represents the collective strength, expertise, and professionalism of Canada's association management community.

As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, we extend our gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the Chapter's success over the past ten years.

Together, we have built more than an organization—we have built a community.

And the best chapters of our story are still to come.
